No One

I recall impact, that instant when white hot flame

Blazed a trail ‘cross my eye

Almost meteoric, that brilliance in which you bathed

Almost blinding, that light

And your walk left a wake of men strewn like leaves

Off to either side

Timid, hesitating, I was weightless, lost on my feet,

Washed away in the tide.

I felt things come loose inside me

Clumsy youth, untie me!

You’ve no right to bind me in

This altered state of mind

You were breathless as a first kiss

Can it be she feels this

Holy warmth that sinks and seeps

And settles in my veins

Be still, my tremblin’ heart!

Don’t give yourself away

Cease your silly beating

Arrest and hold this moment for always

Who saw this coming?

No one did.

I recall rain that poured down like all Heaven’s waters,

Loosed to flow as they please

As if high hosts wept and watched and with rapt attention

Kept politely their peace

I know that in part this was my own doing

That I built you too high

Even so, I had no will to blot the afterglow

Burning clear in my mind

For I felt things come loose inside me

Clumsy youth, untie me!

You’ve no right to bind me in

This altered state of mind

You were breathless as a first kiss

Can it be she feels this

Holy warmth that sinks and seeps

And settles in my veins

When all we had to do

Was say those few words out loud

But I was much to scared, and I think

You were just too damn proud.

Who’s laughing now?

No one is.

Don’t leave me alone!

Don’t leave me alone,

Because without you I become no one.
